Vantage Hoteliers Alliance gives independent hotels the distribution reach of a flag without handing over the name on the door: direct-booking parity, GDS chain-code representation and a working plan to recover what you pay the OTAs.

Distribution comparison
Three ways an independent can reach travelers, side by side. Figures are typical ranges, not quotes.
| Route | Typical cost of sale | Rate control | Brand identity | Corporate / GDS reach |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OTA only (Expedia, Booking.com) | 15–25% | Shared; parity clauses apply | OTA listing format | Limited |
| Legacy franchise flag | 12–18% all-in fees | Brand-set | Surrendered to the flag | Strong |
| Vantage Hoteliers Alliance | Direct-first; membership fee | Property-set, parity-monitored | Your name stays on the door | Sabre, Amadeus, Travelport under a shared chain code |

Restored 1920s building. Direct bookings now lead its channel mix, with the booking engine on a parity-checked rate feed.
Owner-operated inn using a 30-night workation rate to fill midweek in shoulder season.
Social lobby, parents’-weekend blocks and a visiting-fellow rate card for the nearby campus.
Design-led city hotel listed in Sabre and Amadeus under the alliance chain code, with negotiated corporate rates.
Seasonal resort running metasearch bidding against a parity-locked rate so OTAs can’t undercut the direct price.

Notes from the director
Most independent owners I meet can tell me their ADR to the dollar and have no idea what the OTAs cost them over a year. When we add it up together, it is usually the largest line on the P&L after payroll.
You don’t need to leave the OTAs. They fill rooms on soft nights and introduce you to guests who would never have found you. The goal is narrower: make sure the guest who already knows your name books with you, and that corporate travel desks can find you without a flag on the building.
If the calculator above surprises you, send me your numbers and we’ll go through them line by line.
